Description

The Detroit Club was formed on October 11, 1882, by lawyer Samuel Douglas and Banker James T. Campbel. The private social club recruited one hundred businessmen to join, including the founder of the Michigan Telephone Company, Hugh McMillan, and a former Michigan Governor, Russell A. Alger. Quickly outgrowing its first clubhouse on Lafayette, the members enlisted architect Wilson Eyre to construct their new clubhouse at 712 Cass Avenue, which would later become one of Detroit’s most iconic buildings. The club’s ‘Romanesque Revival’ styled building, seated at the corner of Cass and Fort Avenues in Detroit’s Downtown Business District, was completed in 1891. The most recent renovations occurred between 2014 and 2017 to modernize the club while continuing to pay homage to its history. Today the club welcomes guests to enjoy the first floor restaurant (with industrial kitchen) and first floor Library bar, with a cigar lounge on the third floor, and a ballroom for grand events. Th
